R Cedar’s mulching machines employ a
mulching head containing a large drum fitted with many cutting
teeth. The drum is spun at high speed by hydraulic motors. The head
can be raised, lowered and angled to provide the best contact
between the cutting teeth and the material to be mulched. Each
mulching head is also fitted with a
“mulching door” that can be
closed to enable the head to produce a finer mulch. In some of the
videos you can see this door opening and closing.
The mulch produced is coarser than
the mulch you would purchase at a garden store. If you wish we can
leave it coarser, reducing your cost or can “regrind” it producing a
finer mulch. In any case the mulch will help to hold moisture in the
soil and will encourage and support the growth of grasses and wild
flowers.
R Cedar operates two sizes of
mulching machines. You can read more about the machines on our
Equipment
page. The smaller machine is highly maneuverable allowing
it to work quickly in and among hardwood trees that are to be
preserved. Working in smaller trees and brush it is probably just as
fast as the larger machine. It’s also cost effective for smaller
jobs where the cost of moving the larger machine may not be
justified.
The larger machine is based on a
specially-built wheel loader. It weighs more, has more horsepower
and can convert large trees to mulch quicker than the smaller
machine. Clearing large areas and significant numbers of dead Oaks
usually call for the use of the big machine. In some instances using
both sizes of machines is the best approach. |
